From the NC500 to Nepal: helping more children and schools

The support raised through the NC500 is already making a difference in Nepal.

As our fundraising continues, we are able to extend Peak Education Nepal’s support to more children who would otherwise struggle to remain in education, while also committing to the long-term support of three new primary schools in some of the most underfunded and remote communities.

Helping children stay in school

Bishnu continues to receive news from communities across the areas where we work about families who are struggling to provide for their children. He and his wife, Laxmi, visit families personally and take time to understand their circumstances before we decide whether Peak Education Nepal can and should help.

This careful approach is important to us. We want every pound donated to be used where it can make a genuine difference, and we do not make decisions about support without understanding the needs of each family.

We have recently agreed to support three new students.

Baba is six years old and in Grade 2. She is a bright and hardworking girl, but neither of her parents is currently able to work because of severe health problems. Without help, continuing her education would be extremely difficult for her family.

Rajesh is 12 and in Grade 6. He comes from a family of four children which is struggling to afford even enough food. He lives in a remote village which is largely cut off during the monsoon season, which has now begun in Nepal. For now, we are supporting Rajesh, with the possibility of helping his younger sister in the future.

These are not simply school fees. For these children, education represents opportunity, stability and the possibility of building a different future.

Three new primary schools

We have agreed to support three new underfunded primary schools, beginning with Jhaprangkot Basic School.

The school sits high in the jungle, reached by a long trail (mostly a hike) up the mountain. For this remote community, getting basic supplies to the school is difficult both financially and logistically.

Last month after careful consultation with the school, Bishnu delivered new school uniforms, a water dispenser providing hot and cold drinking water, and mats for the concrete floors in the old school building. He also took essential teaching and educational supplies.

The response from the children, teachers and the whole community was wonderful. When Bishnu and Laxmi had finished handing out the uniforms, the children sang a song for them to say thank you.

It is a small school, with only ten pupils, but it is a lifeline for this community. That is exactly why we believe it is important and what we set out to do as a charity.

We have also committed to supporting two further primary schools, and we will bring you more news about these schools next month.

You can see more from the visit to Jhaprangkot on our Instagram and Facebook reels.

Watching our first students grow

One of the most rewarding parts of our work is seeing what happens when children are given the chance to stay in education.

In July, Ushikya, one of the first two children to receive support from Peak Education Nepal back in 2022, started college. She is now studying science at Pravita Secondary School for Grades 11 and 12.

She is doing amazingly well, not only with her studies but also with her confidence and ambition. Some of you will remember her story, but for those who can’t, Ushikya is from a small community and her mother was unable to support her education. Their only income as a family (with her brother to support as well) was from a milking buffalo. (image below from 2022)

Without education Ushikya would have had no real opportunities other than unskilled labour in the fields and selling ghee from the buffalo milk.  Seeing her progress from the shy and isolated child that Bishnu first met in 2022 to a young woman now, beginning the next stage of her education with so many dreams ahead, is exactly why this work matters.

Dhalwagiri School

At Dhalwagiri School, Bishnu also visited the three students we support: Yoel, Pawan and Prakirti.

All three are doing exceptionally well in their studies. Pawan is now in his final year and is studying hotel management. He was suddenly orphaned a couple of years ago, leaving him unable to continue education without support. He now lives with his grandmother and hopes to support her as soon as he finishes education. We are looking forward to seeing where his education takes him after school.

For Prakirti, this is her first year being supported by the charity, and we are looking forward to learning more about her interests and what she enjoys at school.

Yoel is growing up fast and continues to live on the school premises with his mother, who is now working as a security guard at the school.

Your support makes this possible

None of this happens by accident. Every decision to support a child or school is considered carefully. Bishnu and Laxmi visit communities and families, we look at the circumstances they are facing, and we consider where our limited funds can have the greatest long-term impact.

The children and schools we support may be small in number, but the difference that education can make to the lives we touch is enormous.

The fundraising generated through the NC500 has given us the confidence to take on more children and begin supporting more schools. But this is only possible because people choose to support Peak Education Nepal.

If you have already donated, thank you. Your generosity is helping children stay in school and giving small, remote communities access to things that many of us take completely for granted.

If you have not yet donated, or would like to help us support more children and schools, please consider making a donation today. Every contribution helps us reach another child, another classroom or another community. Bishnu and Laxmi are contacted almost daily now by people in need.

If you wish to conduct your own fundraiser for us, on any scale,  please get in touch through the website or email: caroline@peakeducationnepal.com

Please share this update with anyone who might be interested in education of children in Nepal. Thank you so much for your ongoing support.

Shree Saraswoti School: Turning Generosity into Opportunity

In November, during the first week of a three-week trip to Nepal, two of our trustees, Mark and Caroline, visited Shree Saraswoti Basic School. This tiny primary school with just ten children is tucked away in a remote mountain community in the Pokhara Valley. As some of you will remember, when we first began supporting the school a few years ago, it had little more than concrete buildings and empty classrooms.

Since then, thanks to your generosity, so much has changed.

Our student family grows

In June, our local coordinator, Bishnu, visited communities we support and identified five more children in need of financial assistance to continue their education. With strong ties to schools and community leaders, Bishnu is able to connect with families in need, and as our reputation grows, more stories are reaching us. Thanks to the dedication of our trustees and the generosity of our donors, we’re able to expand our support and help even more families.
